Solution:

\begin{aligned} &2 \mathrm{x}^{2}-40=18-40 \\ &2 \mathrm{x}^{2}=18 \\ &\mathrm{x}^{2}=9 \\ &\mathrm{x}=\pm 3 \end{aligned}
