D=5x^{2}+8x

Hint:

Determinant matrix must be square (i.e. same number of rows and columns)

Given:

\begin{vmatrix} x &-7 \\ x &5x+1 \end{vmatrix}

Solution:

\begin{aligned} &\mathrm{D}=\mathrm{a}_{11} \times \mathrm{C}_{11}+\mathrm{a}_{21} \times \mathrm{C}_{21} \\ &=\mathrm{x}(5 \mathrm{x}+1)+(-7 \mathrm{x}) \\ &=5 \mathrm{x}^{2}+\mathrm{x}+7 \mathrm{x} \\ &=5 \mathrm{x}^{2}+8 \mathrm{x} \end{aligned}
