Given:P\left(\frac{A}{B}\right)=p, P(A)=p, P(B)=\frac{1}{3}, P(A \cup B)=\frac{5}{9}

Solution:

As,

\begin{aligned} &P\left(\frac{A}{B}\right)=p \\ &\frac{P(A \cap B)}{P(B)}=p \\ &P(A \cap B)=p \times \frac{1}{3} \\ &P(A \cap B)=\frac{p}{3} \end{aligned}

Now,

\begin{aligned} &P(A \cup B)=\frac{5}{9} \\ &P(A) \times P(B)-P(A \cap B)=\frac{5}{9} \end{aligned}

\begin{aligned} &p+\frac{1}{3}-\frac{p}{3}=\frac{5}{9} \\ &p-\frac{p}{3}=\frac{5}{9}-\frac{1}{3} \\ &\frac{3 p-p}{3}=\frac{5-3}{9} \\ &\frac{2 p}{3}=\frac{2}{9} \\ &p=\frac{1}{3} \end{aligned}
