Given: P(A)=\frac{1}{3} P(B) \text { and } \mathrm{S}=\mathrm{A} \cup \mathrm{B}

Solution:

\begin{aligned} &P(A)=\frac{1}{3} P(B) \\ &P(B)=3 P(A) \end{aligned}

A and B are mutually exclusive events,

\begin{aligned} &\Rightarrow P(A \cap B)=0 \\ &P(A \cup B)=P(A)+P(B)=P(S) \\ \end{aligned}

\begin{aligned} &P(A)+P(B)=1 \\ &P(A)+3 P(A)=1 \quad \rightarrow \text { from }(1) \\ &4 P(A)=1 \\ &P(A)=\frac{1}{4} \end{aligned}
